How do I disable my iGPU so I can only display with my dGPU?
My laptop is always plugged in, so I have no reason to use my iGPU. I have a mux chip, giving me the option to turn the Nvidia Optimus mode off.
I tried setting the BIOS to "dedicated GPU, LCD display, disable OS detection for Optimus". When I booted up, I checked device manager for driver errors. Both the Intel and Nvidia drivers disappeared. They were replaced with basic display adaptor. After 30-40 seconds, the display disconnected with a black screen.
My specs are:
- System: ThinkPad W520
- iGPU: HD3000
- dGPU: Quadro 2000m
- Resolution: 1920x1080p
- CPU: I7-2760QM
- RAM: 24GB
- Storage: 500GB SSD
Update: I reinstalled my drivers from the lenovo driver hub. It fixed the "vga compatible" glitch, but not the display black-out. Turns out i had a lot of drivers i needed to update, as well as a cumulative update. Still might not fix my issue though.
Post Update: I realised that the Nvidia card is always idling and turning off Optimus mode switches the driver to basic display adaptor.
Errors so far:
- Code 18 (fixed)
- VGA compatible controller (fixed)
- Not currently using a display attached to NVIDIA GPU
- Update error 0x80070005 (fixed) (irrelevant)
- Basic Display Adaptor being preferred over dgpu
- Idling dgpu
OK BIG UPDATE I recently learned that nvidia kepler driver support was dropped for windows 10, but kept for windows 7 and 8.1. Hope this helps! (also It kind of answers my question, in an unfortunate way. Sorry if it crushed your dreams :] )
